Mushroom, Birch, Plum Blossom
Overnight showers and in the morning, mushrooms appear on the lawn. There is no treasure more opulent than birch trees covered in gold leaves. Grey sky, but no rain – one blossom falls from the plum tree.

Saturday Hike
Heart pounding, I climb Mount Diablo. There are coyotes in the hills below Eagle Peak. At the summit, crows fly higher than clouds. Sunset in two hours – I hurry back to the trailhead.

Burgess Park Haiku
The old, molting duck tucks its head behind a wing and stands on one foot. That grove of redwoods beside the town library is home to a hawk. Plum trees dapple the lawn with mauve blossoms. Sunlight glistens on swimmers’ bodies in the pool. Every night, cars parked under the jacaranda are covered with seeds.
